As a residential treatment center and educational facility for mentally retarded persons in Massachusetts, the Walter E. Fernald State School has had responsibility for immunization of client and staff against certain diseases. This series was created by the school and its immediate predecessor to administer serums against smallpox, tuberculosis, typhoid, and other contagious diseases.
